Outrage over fiery death


Over time, we have always come across news of failure of society to come to the assistance of another fellow being in need. We are good at condemning the act of others but have we ever took the time to reflect on ourselves and are we always ready to assist others in times of need. The recent report over the untimely and fiery death of a woman in her car after petrol kiosk after attendants refused to lend fire extinguishers to save her became another public outcry over the behavior of our society. What has become of our society?? Where are we heading to? Are we no longer a caring society? Is this the price of development that we have to bear?

Parental Responsibility

There was an editorial in New Straits Times last week (first week of August 2008) on the issue of parental responsibility. I wrote in my blog quite some time back entitle “Parents to Pay for Misbehaved Children”. You may wish to read it whereby in brief it is basically on the decision of the Government of Syrian to decree that parents should be held responsible for their children behavior. Societies at large have in general highlighted the rights of the child which should not be impinged by others as provided for under the Child Act 2001. Notwithstanding this, there are instances where adults/parents should be held accountable for the child’s behavior. Their actions if not properly monitored from young would bring about negative development in society and the nation in the long run.

As such parents should be held responsible to the overall development of their child. They should not only be held accountable for the provisions of material needs but also showered with love to fulfill their spiritual and moral needs which they could effectively emulate and passed down to future generations. Strength of character infused with respect, honesty, responsibility and care defines the backbone to a society. These invaluable values have to be imbued back into society starting from each individual home. Development and progress should not be used as an excuse for one to neglect that responsibility.

Are Malaysians that gullible and easily conned?

A staggering RM20mil - that’s how much Malaysians have been conned by African tricksters in the past few years in at least 11 internationally known scams ranging from Black Money to inheritances which promise non-existent wealth. That was what was reported in The Star a couple of days ago. The victims are, ironically, educated people such as lawyers, accountants, academicians and even politicians who somehow were convinced that they could become instant millionaires by investing with these people despite all the publicity about such scams.

As mentioned in the report, these scams are not something new. It has been around under different names or schemes. It was generally known before as advance fee fraud. This form of fraud is similar to a much older scam known as the Spanish Prisoner scam in which the trickster would tell the scam victim that a (fictitious) rich prisoner had promised to share (non-existent) treasure with the victim if the latter would send money to bribe the prison guards. An even older version of this scam existed by the end of 18th century, and is called "the Letter From Jerusalem" by Eugène François Vidocq in his memoirs

An advance-fee fraud is a confidence trick in which the target is persuaded to advance sums of money in the hope of realizing a significantly larger gain. Among the variations on this type of scam, are the Nigerian Letter (also called the 419 fraud, Nigerian scam, Nigerian bank scam, or Nigerian money offer, the Black money scam as well as Russian/Ukrainian scam (also extremely widespread, though far less popular than the former). Both the so-called Russian and Nigerian scams stand for wholly dissimilar organized crime traditions, they therefore tend to use altogether different breeds of approaches.

The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (part of Chapter 38: "Obtaining Property by false pretences; Cheating") dealing with fraud. The 419 scam originated in the early 1980s as the oil-based Nigerian economy declined. Several unemployed university students first used this scam as a means of manipulating business visitors interested in shady deals in the Nigerian oil sector before targeting businessmen in the west, and later the wider population. Scammers in the early-to-mid 1990s targeted companies, sending scam messages via letter, fax, or telex. The spread of email and easy access to email-harvesting software significantly lowered the cost of sending scam letters by utilizing the Internet. In the 2000s, the 419 scam has spurred imitations from other locations in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, and, more recently, from North America, Western Europe (mainly UK), and Australia, the latter three mainly done by Africans.

Some other typical scams include cases where victims of the scam are promised a lottery win (example) or a large sum of money sitting in a bank account or in a deposit box at a security company. Often the storyline involves a family member of a former member of government of an African country, a ministerial official, an orphan or widow of a rich businessman, etc. Here is an example. Variants of the plot involving the Philippines, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, Mauritius, etc. are also known. Some emails include pictures of boxes stuffed with dollar bills, scans of fake passports, bank or government documents and pictures of supposedly the sender.

With so much literature written available on the net and occasional reports of scams and frauds, one cannot help but wonder how Malaysians could still fall prey to such scams?????.

Wish to share two interesting news that I came across while browsing the internet. It may be laughable but it is true.

i. Bus Driver Sacked for Saving Frog [As reported in Austrian Times]

French bus driver has been told to hop it by her German bosses - after stopping her double-decker bus to rescue a frog in the road. Astonished Christina Pommerel, 46, had been working for the RBO bus company in Regensburg, Germany for 13 years before she was sacked from her 1,300 GBP-a-month job.

"One of the bus passengers complained to the management. They told me I should have squashed the frog and not stopped. When I said I couldn't do that I was fired," said Christina. "It was in the middle of the road so I slowed down and put on the hazard flashers. Then I climbed out and put the frog in a box so I could take it to the side of the road and let it free.

"Then I got back on the Number Five bus and carried on with the journey and pretty much forgot about the incident until the management said they'd had a complaint," she added.

ii. Russian Doctors Find Tree Growing in Man's Lung [As reported in Novosti]

Surgeons in Russia's Urals Region were staggered to find a 5-centimeter high spruce growing inside a man's lung, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported on Monday. The discovery was made while Artyom Sidorkin, 28, from the Urals city of Izhevsk, was undergoing surgery.

Sidorkin had complained of extreme pain in his chest and had been coughing up blood, doctors suspected cancer. "I blinked three times and thought I was seeing things," Izhevsk surgeon Vladimir Kamashev told the paper. Medical staff believe Sidorkin had somehow inhaled a seed, which later sprouted inside his lung. The spruce, which was touching the man's capillaries and causing severe pain, was removed.

"It was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me," Sidorkin said

Parents to Pay for Misbehaved Children

Follow-up to my earlier posting entitled Juvenile Delinquency, I came across an interesting decision by the government of Syria in relation to mitigating the rising problem of indiscipline especially among school going children. It was announced that the government will be taking actions against parents of misbehaving children. The full report available here.

In relation to that, Malaysia may perhaps look into introducing such actions in order to address the rise of crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and theft among school going children. The parents could not just passed the problem to others. They have to take full responsibility on their child upbringing.

It is going to be a serious social problem to the country in the future if not appropriately addressed now!

Juvenile Delinquency

Read in one of the Malaysian daily newspaper last week on the question of juvenile delinquency especially among students which is on the rise and becoming a serious concern to the police. According to the Malaysian Institute of Research for Youth Development, the students are found to be involved in various crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and theft. It seems that the students had graduated from being mere school bullies to something more serious! Meanwhile another study conducted by the Malaysian Studies on Psychology and Development Center showed that 87% of the ‘mat rempit (motorcycle daredevils)’ in the country were mostly students aged between 14 and 25 years. What is going on? What is the future going to be for the country?

I think we should seriously ponder on the problem and formulate a comprehensive policies and plan of actions to address this malaise in society. We should not be complacent in our approach and be contented by merely having ad hoc programs. We should analyze why does this situation becomes so rampant now and not in the past. Why are students becoming disrespectful of their teachers? Parents must also take responsibilities on the upbringing of their children and not merely passing that responsibility to the teachers or their house helpers. Parents should also not learn to respect the teachers. How does one expect the students to respect and listen to the teachers when the parents themselves show disrespect and look down on the teachers? Teachers are always blamed and targeted by parents when their sons/daughters failed to do well in examinations. But the moment a teacher scold or take disciplinary action against a student, the parent will come scurrying to the school and raising voices and running tantrums. There need to really be a serious concerted effort to have dialogue to better understand the respective role of the teachers, parents and the school. The expectations of parents in the past and now are different. But that should not negate the responsibility of parents in raising their children.

The question of juvenile delinquency is closely related with morality. And the problem of moral decadence has surfaced quite some time back and programs have been introduced to address it. However, based on the current findings of the above two institutes, it has not improved but the situation has actually deteriorated further. Government may need to relook at all those programs and change it accordingly for the interest and wellbeing of the nation in the future. More importantly, parents and societies need to be equally responsible in mitigating the moral decadence especially among the youth by being role models and setting good examples for them to emulate.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad di Perhimpunan dan Sidang Kemuncak Pribumi Perkasa Negara, di Kuala Lumpu yang telah diadakan di Kuala Lumpur pada Ahad 22 Mac yang lepas. Teks ucapan tersebut dipautkan ke blog ini untuk saya jadikan pedoman dan ingatan kepada diri sendiri akan tanggungjawab terhadap Bangsa, Agama dan Negara. Kemelut politik yang melanda negara telah sampai ke tahap yang membimbangkan dan sekiranya masih terus lena dan tiada kesedaran akan membawa kehancuran bukan sahaja kepada negara malahan bangsa dan agama.
